Early Life and Introduction to Social Work

Fenwick was born and raised on Baltimore’s gritty east side. He came from a working-class family and was one of five siblings. As a child, Fenwick witnessed firsthand the struggles that many face living in an underprivileged urban environment—high rates of crime, poverty, failing schools, and lack of economic opportunities. These early life experiences exposed Fenwick at a young age to the harsh realities of social inequities.

After graduating high school, Fenwick attended Coppin State University. There he studied social work and became increasingly passionate about community development. Upon graduating in 1995 with a degree in Social Work, Fenwick took a job as a case manager at a homeless shelter in Baltimore. In this role, he helped connect at-risk individuals with needed social services and support systems. The job opened Fenwick’s eyes to how systemic failures can leave many with few options to improve their lives.

    Launching a Career in Activism

1999 Fenwick co-founded the social justice organization Communities Organized to Improve Life (COIL). Through COIL, Fenwick spearheaded grassroots campaigns around a variety of issues impacting Baltimore’s disadvantaged communities—from improving public education to expanding access to affordable healthcare to curbing violent crime. COIL utilized tactics like rallies, protests, petitioning, and civic engagement to amplify the voices of marginalized groups and enact positive policy changes.

Some of COIL’s early campaigns included:

    • Lobbying for increased funding for Baltimore’s public schools which were struggling with overcrowding, crumbling infrastructure, and lack of resources.
    • Organizing to establish a network of community health centres in underserved Baltimore neighbourhoods to expand access to primary care.
    • Pushing for criminal justice reforms like increased transparency around police misconduct complaints and ending racially disproportionate drug sentencing.
    • Championing living wage legislation for workers in Baltimore receiving public subsidies or tax breaks.

Through his grassroots efforts at COIL, Fenwick helped bring hope and concrete improvements to many facing the daily realities of inequity. His effective organizing style focused heavily on empowering local grassroots leaders while simultaneously pressuring politicians and decision-makers.

    Rising Profile and Continued Activism

By the late 2000s, Demetris Fenwick had established himself as a prominent voice for social justice in Baltimore. He regularly appeared in local media advocating for the underprivileged or speaking out against injustices. In 2010, Fenwick took a one-year leave from COIL to serve as a community organizer for President Obama’s re-election campaign, mobilizing groups facing systemic barriers in Baltimore.

In 2012, Fenwick co-founded the Maryland Alliance for Justice and Democracy (MAJD), a statewide coalition that coordinates local organizations advocating on social, racial, and economic justice issues impacting Maryland. Through MAJD, Fenwick has helped organize campaigns pushing for criminal justice reforms, increased healthcare access, expanded voting rights, and improved worker protections across Maryland.

Some notable campaigns Fenwick has led through MAJD include:

    • Lobbying the Maryland state legislature to ban private prisons and reinvest correctional funding into community support programs.
    • Organizing to establish driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants in Maryland for improved road safety.
    • Pushing passed the Maryland Driver Privacy Act of 2019 prohibiting law enforcement from accessing driver location data without a warrant.
    • Rallying support for raising Maryland’s minimum wage to $15/hour which was passed into law in 2019.

Even amid a global pandemic in 2020, Fenwick refused to slow down his activism. He organized food and supply distribution efforts for Baltimore’s hardest-hit neighbourhoods. Fenwick also advocated forcefully for temporary moratoriums on evictions and utility shutoffs to help struggling families. Through MAJD, he pushed (successfully) for Emergency Paid Sick Leave legislation in Maryland to support low-income essential workers.

Awards and Recognition for Social Justice Work

Demetris Fenwick’s relentless efforts to advance social equity through community empowerment and grassroots mobilization have earned him wide respect and recognition. In 2009, Fenwick received the Daily Record’s Leadership in Law Award for his work fighting inequality through civic participation and policy reform.

In 2014, Progressive Maryland presented Fenwick with a Grassroots Activist Award for his decade of work through COIL and other organizations improving lives in marginalized Baltimore communities.

Perhaps Fenwick’s greatest recognition came in 2017 when the Obama Foundation named him a Community Champion. The award, given to just 25 civic leaders nationwide that year, honoured Fenwick’s immense contributions as a social justice advocate, skills as an organizer and coalition builder, and passion for empowering disadvantaged groups.

Continuing the Fight with Determination and Compassion

Now in his late 40s, Demetris Fenwick shows no signs of slowing down his fight to remedy injustice. Through COIL, MAJD, and as an influential voice in Baltimore, Fenwick continues mobilizing for progressive change every day. Whether lobbying local legislators, rallying activists, or distributing aid amid crises, Fenwick puts in long hours in service of communities too often ignored.

What drives Fenwick’s tireless advocacy after over 20 years is both a sense of outrage at the inequities others face combined with deep compassion for helping people improve their lives. Through grassroots organizing focused on empowerment, Fenwick strives to create lasting change from the ground up. While acknowledging much work remains, Fenwick takes pride in the progress made in making Baltimore and Maryland more equitable and just places to live. Armed with determination and empathy, Fenwick will surely remain on the frontlines of the movement for social justice for many years to come.
