The United States has always welcomed immigrants and citizens from other countries. This year, it seems the US is on a path to grant over 1 million visas to people from India alone. Reasons for Increased Visa Approvals

There are several factors contributing to the projected high number of visas for Indian nationals in 2022:

    • Growing demand for skilled IT professionals: American companies continue expanding their technology and digital operations. This creates a huge demand for skilled workers from the large talent pool available in India. Popular visa categories like H-1B and L-1 cater to this demand.
    • Backlog clearances post pandemic: The COVID-19 pandemic had hampered visa processing worldwide. However, authorities have sped up approvals now to clear the backlogs. This is positively impacting visa statistics.
    • Diversity Visa Lottery: Every year, around 55,000 Green Cards are allocated through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. A large number of these visas are awarded to applicants from India, which increases the totals.
    • Family-based visas: People of Indian-origin already settled in America can sponsor family members like spouses, children, parents etc. through various family preference visas. This contributes significantly to the annual number.
    • Bilateral ties and policies: Under successive governments, both countries have strengthened cooperation across diverse sectors. Immigration policies also support this strategic partnership in areas like trade and defence.

    Positive Impacts for Both Nations

Reaching the 1 million mark shows how vital immigration is for India and US. It brings about several benefits:

    For the US:

    • Fills skill gaps and labor shortages through talented professionals. This boosts productivity and innovation.
    • Drives economic growth with increased spending power and consumption. Immigrants also pay billions in taxes, health insurance and contribute to Social Security.
    • Supports an aging native population. Immigrants help offset declining birth rates, and stabilize population demographics.

    For India:

    • Reduces unemployment through opportunities abroad for skilled youth. This eases domestic demand-supply mismatches.
    • Boosts the knowledge economy through skills and experiences gained. Returned immigrants act as assets bringing global exposure.
    • Generates foreign remittances, one of India’s largest financial inflows. In 2021, remittances touched a record high of $87 billion.
    • Strengthens cultural and people-to-people ties. Emigrants become informal ambassadors promoting Brand India globally.

    Popular Visa Categories for Indians

The following are some of the commonly used visa categories through which most Indians receive approval to live and work in the United States:

    H-1B Visa

    • For skilled professionals in specialist occupations requiring higher education like IT, engineering, healthcare etc.
    • Annual cap of 65,000 plus 20,000 for those with a Master’s degree from a US institution.
    • Initial period of 3 years extendable to 6 years maximum. Portable across jobs and employers.

    L-1 Visa

    • For internal company transfers when the subsidiary or parent is American. Often used by IT firms.
    • Initial period of up to 7 years (L-1A) depending on role and 1 year (L-1B) for specialists.
    • Streamlined process but job must involve managerial, executive or skills requiring specialty occupation roles.

    E Visa

    • For talented professionals, artists, athletes having extraordinary ability. Less than 10,000 granted annually.
    • Valid upto 5 years and renewable subject to criteria.

    F Visa

    • For students who have completed academic courses and want to gain practical training through Optional Practical Training (OPT).
    • Initial OPT permit for up to 3 years, STEM OPTextension up to 24 months more. Converts to H-1B later if selected.

Green Card through Family or Diversity Visa

    • Grants permanent residency upon approval of applications under different family or employment preferences.
    • Leads to citizenship after meeting residential stay rules over 3-5 years depending on route.

Despite Challenges Ahead, Numbers Expected to Rise

While immigrant approvals have swelled this year, challenges remain ahead for sustaining the momentum:

    • Economic uncertainties due to high inflation, interest rate rises could impact future jobs and hiring. This may reduce future demand for some visa categories.
    • Strict scrutiny of H-1B visa petitions and higher denial rates under the „Buy American, Hire American‟ policy framework bring unpredictability. Tight labor market conditions will also put pressure on enrollments for the F-1 visa route.
    • Backlogs and processing delays continue to be issues, especially for family and employment-based Green Card categories with countries like India and China having longest wait times.
    • Stringent policies like the recent H-1B registration fee hike and more wage-level based selection increase compliance costs, weeding out smaller companies and startups from hiring foreign talent pool.

However, policy experts feel the fundamentals driving US-India ties and people-to-people bonds remain strong. Bilateral collaboration across sectors like technology, healthcare and education is also gaining momentum to solve issues like the pandemic, climate change focusing on STEM skills. This will ensure the annual numbers cross a million again despite hurdles faced in certain visa categories. Moreover, India also needs skills and remittances and Americans demand talent – helping policymakers stabilize visa flows benefitting both economies.

    Prospects Going Further Ahead

To sustain high approval levels in the future, stakeholders may explore these options:

    • Lobby for increasing annual caps on popular quotas witnessing highest demand like H-1B. Current limits were decided long back and need revision matching today’s realities.
    • Fast-track processing under premium services for critical and time-sensitive occupations in shortage like nurses, software architects to meet immediate necessities.
    • Encourage inclusive immigration reforms providing certainty and pathways to permanent residence for law-abiding undocumented populations including from Asia and South America.
    • Consider unemployment-linked visa extensions or portable visas incentivizing setting up businesses rather than forcing people to change employers frequently under contractual work visas like H and L.
    • Facilitate border processing further and loosen in-person interview rules in nonimmigrant visa categories post-pandemic to ease travel and clear backlogs faster.
    • Allow dual intent for more visa types like H-1B so applicants can pursue Green Cards without worrying about intent implications mid-processing. This improves options and flexibility.

If addressed properly through cooperation and innovative solutions, the historic trend of over a million visas favored to Indians per year can sustain and even grow manifolds in the Post-Covid era benefiting both economies and people immensely for decades ahead. Immigrants continue fueling the American success story by bringing global experiences while solving critical domestic needs of jobs and skills. This partnership has strengthened over the test of time and will keep enhancing prosperity world over.
