A museum curator oversees the collection, documentation, care, and exhibition of objects and artefacts that a museum owns. They research the history and cultural significance of items in the collection to educate the public best. This career requires a love of history, art, and culture. Here is a closer look at a typical day and the rewarding journey to becoming a museum curator.

    Daily responsibilities

When Jennifer arrives at the local history museum each morning, she checks her emails for new acquisitions or loan requests from other institutions. She organizes shipping and logistics to bring new items into the collection or temporarily send others out. Next, Jennifer meets with her team of researchers and assistants to delegate tasks for the day, such as cataloguing a new batch of photographs in the archives or researching the provenance of a recently donated painting.

Later in the morning, Jennifer gave a tour to a school group highlighting the current special exhibit. She engaged the children with history stories and asked them questions to check their understanding. After the tour, she met with conservators to review the condition of the artefacts on display and make plans for any items needing restoration work. Before lunch, Jennifer spent time researching the background of a Civil War-era flag so she could write interpretation texts to accompany it on the museum gallery floor.

In the afternoon, Jennifer focuses on planning upcoming exhibits. She works with designers on mockups for a new layout, writes wall text and digital labels, and decides which artefacts best tell the story. At the end of the day, she participates in an education program for adults using primary sources to teach about the 1860 presidential election. On her way out the door, Jennifer checks in with the front desk staff and posts any new events on the museum’s social media channels.

    Educational background

So, what path does one take to land such an exciting career? Jennifer started with a bachelor’sbachelor’s degree in history, focusing on American studies and archaeology. During her undergraduate years, she gained valuable hands-on experience through museum internships, where she assisted curators with projects. After graduating, Jennifer realized she wanted to further her education to lead initiatives.

She enrolled in a master’s program in art history and museum studies. Her coursework covered collection management, exhibition design, art authentication, and cultural heritage law. For her capstone project, Jennifer curated a small exhibit on the works of an obscure landscape painter. This allowed her to get feedback and network with professionals in the field. It was during her master’s master’s that Jennifer secured her first full-time job as a curatorial assistant at a small local art museum.

    Making it as a curator

Jennifer spent two years in that assistant role, gaining exposure to museum operations before seeking a curator job. She applied for mid-level positions in art and history museums, emphasizing the breadth of her experience. It took several interviews, but she was eventually chosen for a staff curator role specializing in 20th-century design at an internationally recognized design museum in a major city.

Now, five years into that job, Jennifer oversees the care of 10,000 objects and two major exhibits annually visited by 30,000 people. She is working towards full curator status, which would come with more involvement in strategic planning and fundraising initiatives. While the work is challenging, Jennifer loves the rewards of sharing her knowledge, bringing history to life, and engaging the community. Becoming a large institution’s lead curator may require another 5-10 years of dedicated experience.

    Benefits and challenges

There are many advantages to a museum curator career beyond intellectual fulfilment. Here are a few highlights:

    • Competitive salaries: Lead curators at significant museums can earn $80,000-$120,000 annually, depending on their city’s institution and cost of living. Pay increases with more experience and responsibilities.
    • Unique schedule: Work involves busy periods around exhibits and time for research and writing projects. Most have core weekday hours but are flexible enough to work evenings and weekends as needed.

-Variety of work: Every day has aspects like collection management, tours, programming, acquisitions, and community outreach.

Engaging field: Constant interaction with art, artefacts, scholars, donors, and the public keeps the work interesting. There are opportunities to travel for conferences, loans, or new acquisitions.

-Admiration of peers: High levels of respect from colleagues and ability to influence how history is interpreted. Publications and speaking engagements boost recognition.

-Lifelong learning: Continuous exposure to diverse cultures and periods expands one’s knowledge and appreciation of the world.

Of course, challenges do come with the job. Budget constraints can limit the acquisition of desired items and the scale of exhibits. Grant writing consumes significant time, and not all applications are successful. Juggling various deadlines and stakeholders’ priorities requires expert project and time management skills. Physical cataloguing work can be tedious. And working in a public-facing role may mean dealing with occasional difficult visitors.

    Personal traits needed

What kind of person thrives in this multifaceted field? Museum curators generally share certain vital traits that aid their success:

-Love of research and problem solving: Digging into the history of objects to uncover new meanings and connections.

-Strong communication skills: Can convey complex ideas simply through text, tours, presentations, and publications for varied audiences.

-Organization and time management: Juggling priorities, budgets, timelines, and staff. Thriving under deadlines.

-Adaptability and flexibility: Willing to take on new responsibilities as needs evolve and budgets change. Able to adjust to unexpected issues.

-Leadership and teamwork: Guiding staff and collaborating with other internal departments and external partners.

-Curiosity and attention to detail: Passion to learn all they can about items in the collection down to the smallest detail. Examining exhibits critically.

-Diplomacy and approachability: Maintaining positive relationships with donors, board members, peers, and community members of all backgrounds.

-Vision and business skills: Strategic thinking for future directions and initiative to secure necessary resources through fundraising.

With dedication to diligent study, ongoing training, and gaining comprehensive experience, those with the drive to share knowledge and an affinity for history, art, and culture can find great personal and professional rewards in the career of a museum curator.
