Maya Kowalski grew up as a normal kid in South Dakota. She enjoyed swimming and spending time with her friends and family. However, at just 13 years old, her life took a devastating turn. In August 2016, Maya was struck by a vehicle while riding her bike. The accident left her paralyzed from the waist down.
The Accident
It was a sunny summer afternoon when Maya decided to go for a bike ride with her brother. As they were biking down the street, a drunk driver lost control of her vehicle and veered onto the sidewalk, directly hitting Maya. She was rushed to the emergency room, where doctors worked desperately to save her life. Thankfully, Maya survived, but the accident resulted in a traumatic spinal cord injury, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.
The accident’s aftermath was difficult for Maya and her family to process. She had to learn how to do everyday tasks like getting dressed, eating and using the bathroom from her wheelchair. At just 13 years old, Maya faced an uncertain future. However, she was determined not to let her injury define who she was. With the support of her loving family and community, Maya embarked on her journey of recovery and reinvention. Maya kowalski
Rehabilitation and Rediscovery
The first year after her injury was focused on Maya’s physical and emotional healing. She underwent intensive physical therapy to regain as much movement and strength as possible. Maya also received counselling to help her accept her new reality. During this time, she rediscovered her love of swimming. Being in the water made Maya feel unrestricted of her wheelchair. This inspired her to begin training again to compete in Paralympic sports.
Through months of gruelling rehabilitation sessions, Maya slowly regained control and function of her legs. By her second year post-injury, she could stand and take a few steps with the help of leg braces and parallel bars. Her determination and work ethic inspired everyone around her. Within just a few years, Maya went from being completely unable to walk to competing in her first Paralympic event—an astonishing achievement by any measure.
