The Hockey India League (HIL) is set to make a remarkable comeback after a seven-year hiatus, sparking plenty of excitement among fans worldwide.
The 2024/25 season is scheduled to kick off on December 28, and the eight teams participating in the men’s league went all out during the player auction to build their squads.
The event was hosted at the Hyatt Regency in New Delhi on October 13-14, and HIL clubs spared no expense in assembling their teams, setting the tone for an action-packed campaign.
The attention-grabbing event featured players worldwide, even from countries such as Germany and the Republic of Ireland that are not renowned for producing hockey talent.
However, their participation in the auction process clearly indicated the HIL’s global reach and the league looks set to become a platform for international hockey stars to showcase their skills.
During the auction, the players were split into three price categories – Rs 2 lakh, Rs 5 lakh, and Rs 10 lakh – which surprisingly depended on the value they had selected for themselves.
The men’s teams were handed a purse string worth Rs 4 crore to strengthen their squads.
The Global Player Pool
A massive pool of players from around the world registered for the auction, which was broadcast live on DD Sports and HIL’s official YouTube channel.
Over 400 registered players were from India, while more than 150 signed up from foreign nations.
When the numbers were announced, what caught the eye was the striking absence of hockey players from across Asia, with only India representing the continent.

Given his impressive CV, Gonzalo Peillat stands out as one to watch out of the many hockey stars who were picked up at the HIL auction.
The 32-year-old German forward was formerly an Argentine international, featuring 153 times and scoring 176 goals during a largely successful eight-year spell with the national team.
However, he switched allegiance to Germany two years ago after acquiring citizenship and went on to win the Hockey World Cup with the national team.
Unsurprisingly, Peillat was the most expensive foreign player at the auction, with Hyderabad Toofans paying Rs 68 lakhs to secure his services.
Goalkeepers were also in high demand, and Ireland’s David Harte was snapped up by Tamil Nadu Dragons for Rs 32 lakh, in a move that will excite Irish hockey fans on the Emerald Isle.
Hockey fans in Ireland will likely pay more attention to the HIL to watch the two-time FIH Goalkeeper of the Year, and their interest could translate to a betting spree.
Legal betting sites in Ireland will be forced to expand their market options to include the HIL and offer a number of betting options, including special promotions.
If Harte establishes himself as a key player for the Dragons, Irish fans will be compelled to place wagers on their compatriot, backing him to play a key role in his club’s performances.
Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh was the most sought-after player on the first day of the auction. Singh was one of the most experienced players at the auction, having won medals at the Olympic Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
He was part of the Indian hockey squad that claimed a bronze medal at the recently concluded Paris Olympics, and his exploits catalysed a massive surge in his value.
Singh was the most expensive player at the auction, surpassing the Rs 70 lakh mark on the first day. He ultimately joined Soorma Hockey Club, and his acquisition could be a massive coup for the Punjab franchise.
HIL Squad Rules & Key Dates
Eight teams will compete in the men’s HIL competition – Chennai, Lucknow, Delhi, Kolkata, Odisha, Hyderabad, Ranchi and Punjab.
Each can name a 24-man squad, including 16 homegrown stars and eight foreign players. At least four of the homegrown stars must be 21 or younger, paving the way for grassroots talents to prove their mettle on the big stage.
With the auction now behind them, the teams will focus on preparing for the HIL curtain raiser on December 28.
The opening ceremony will take place in Rourkela, Odisha. At the same time, the HIL league games will be played at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi and Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela.
Rourkela will also bring the season to an exciting close by hosting the league final on February 1 next year.
