Indoor vs outdoor laundry drying: Which one is better for keeping your clothes fresh?

Having a fresh, clean, and good-smelling closet is the main goal of every person. Still, as easy as it might sound, it doesn’t mean that you just have to throw the laundry in the washing machine, but you have to establish a routine to keep your beloved clothes good-looking and with a pleasing scent. An important part of this process is drying, which can determine the final state of your pieces of clothing. Most of the time, when you feel a strange odour coming from your washed clothes, it is because of improper drying conditions, and the big question arises: is it better to dry the clothes indoors or outdoors? In this article, we are going to compare both methods so you can stick with the one that serves your needs most:

    Consider the weather

Understandably, deciding if it would be better to take the laundry outside or fry the clothes indoors is influenced by the weather conditions. You will not take your wet clothes in the rain expecting them to air dry, but to understand this concept better, let’s see what the effects of the sun and air on our clothes are. Clothes will dry faster outdoors thanks to the high temperature and windy and dry climate, but the only risk is that if you don’t find a good area in your yard, direct contact with the sun could fade the colours of the fabrics. On the other hand, if you want to dry your clothes indoors, you should find a way to simulate the outside temperature, open a window for a windy climate, and wait much longer than you would do outside, so if you have plans for the evening and you live in an apartment, we recommend a drying machine.

    A matter of freshness

there is nothing better than the smell of clean clothes after giving them a good wash. Still, too much laundry perfume can be intoxicating and ruin the fabrics, so what we are looking for is freshness. Air drying your clothes is the best way to get that natural fresh scent, but it’s also essential to find the perfect spot to place your rack because you want to avoid areas near trash bins or other things that could influence the smell. When drying your clothes indoors, it would be best to purchase a qualitative laundry detergent and perfume, choosing one that imitates the natural freshness and provides you with long-term comfort thanks to the softening agents.

What you need to dry clothes outdoors

To dry your clothes properly outdoors, you should take into consideration various factors. First of all, take advantage of the sunny days, and check the weather so you will not have unpleasant surprises. Then, you should find the perfect area to hand your clothes, making sure that the sun doesn’t hit them directly, as their colours could fade. Still, how do you handle your laundry? You should purchase a qualitative drying rack that serves your needs and maintains your clothes in the perfect position for drying. A rack can support a large volume of pieces of any kind, heavy or not, so you don’t have to worry about the load of outfits. Another great alternative is a rotary washing line, which can securely face the windy weather, as it’s very stable, and you can find the perfect size for your balcony or garden.

What you need to dry clothes indoors

If you don’t have the opportunity to leave your laundry in the garden, you can still dry your clothes indoors. First of all, keep in mind that for the best results, you need some ventilation and a dehumidifier to prevent mold and smell, and you can choose a rack as an affordable option. For silky materials and pieces like shirts and dresses, consider using hangers to prevent creases. However, nowadays, the quickest solution is a dryer, which is a machine that, in less than an hour, can get you cosy, warm, and ready-to-wear clothes, so if you have a budget to allocate to technology, you can give it a chance.

How to maintain the colours bright

To stop your colourful clothes from fading, there are some useful tricks to consider. First of all, turn your pieces inside out to protect them in the wash. You can use a colour catcher for bright tones and colour-friendly detergents, and don’t let your clothes in direct contact with the sun for too long. However, using the right products will surely prevent any damage, and you don’t have to worry about your favourite fits for summer. For materials like cotton and denim, it would be best to soak them in water with salt first and then wash them normally. Remember that your clothes have instructions about the care they need, so you can read the labels to know exactly how to manage your laundry with no damage.

    Establishing a laundry routine

Doing the laundry is an important chore, and hygiene is important, and to make it worth your time, it’s essential to stick with a routine. You can try the basket system, which involves keeping laundry baskets to sort the laundry, such as light, dark and colourful clothes, to make the entire process easier. Choose a day per week to dedicate to the chore, preferably during the weekend, and to make your work easier, make sure you remove stains beforehand because it can be frustrating when you can’t wear your favourite shirt and you have to triple wash it.

We hope this article inspires you to establish a realistic laundry routine that can keep your mind at ease for the entire week. There is nothing better than always wearing clean and good-smelling clothes, as it can make you feel more comfortable and boost your self-esteem.
