If you are a cricket lover, then you might know about the DLS method in cricket. The DLS method or Duck-Worth Lewis Stern Method is a new way to calculate the scores of the players in a match that has been cancelled due to the rain. However, though many people are satisfied with the results, only some agree with the accuracy of this method. Let’s explore it here in this blog whether the DLS method is a game changer or a game ruiner. Read the blog to know more.

    What is the DLS Method?

The DLS method, also known as the Duckworth-Lewis Stern Method, is a mathematical formula used to calculate the scores of the teams that have been cancelled due to the rain. In the DLS method, the target score is calculated for the team that is batting second in a limited-overs cricket match interrupted by weather or other circumstances. The DLS cricket method is used in cricket to revise the target of the rain-affected matches. One factor to consider when calculating the DLS method is the number of overs bowled, wickets lost, and the scoring rate of the team batting first before the rain. Like how the net run rate in cricket is used to rank the players who have the same score, even DLS is a metric used to calculate the winner of the match.

However, the formula for calculating the DLS method is [Revised Target= Team 2’s Par Score+ (Team 1’s Score−Team 2’s par score) *(Resources for Team 2/ Resources for Team 1)]

Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis invented the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method. The game was introduced in 1997 and was officially adopted by the ICC in 1999. However, after the retirement of both, the Australian statistician Steven Stern became the guardian of the method and refined the model to better fit modern scoring trends, especially in T20 cricket, which updated the formula as Duckworth Lewis Stern Method. It is still used today in international cricket matches.

What are the uses of this Duckworth-Lewis Stern method?

The DLS method is used in limited-overs cricket to calculate the target scores. However, the following are the uses of the DLS method.

    Proper Comparison

The DLS method serves as a medium of fair comparison for both teams even though they don’t play the full quota of overs due to the interruptions in the matches.

    Decides the Winners

In rain-affected matches, the DLS method helps decide the winner of the game by adjusting the target score based on the progression of the match at the time of interruption.

    Revised Targets

The DLS method helps in recalculating the target score based on the remaining resources, ensuring a fair outcome for the game.

    Planning

The teams use strategic DLS points during the match to plan their bowling and batting strategies based on the different weather conditions.

Henceforth, the following are uses of the DLS methods that help devise a target for the players.

What are the criticisms faced by the DLS method?

Though the DLS method was beneficial for calculating the target scores for the rain-affected matches, it faced criticism from many critics and the public. Here are some criticisms of the DLS method.

    Lacks Transparency

Though the DLS method is transparent and uses unique methodologies for calculating the target score, the exact techniques are kept from the public, which leads to no trust and transparency in them.

    Not for T20

The DLS method was invented to calculate the ODIs, but it is used even for T20 cricket, which is criticised because of the fast-paced nature of the game, which sometimes leads to scores that don’t reflect the actual scores of the players.

    Lacks Accuracy

Some critics and players have also criticised the players for the lack of accuracy in the game. This is because in high-pressure scenarios, the higher the match situation, the more the accuracy might change.

    It’s Complex

The DLS method is a complex mathematical method that is challenging for an average fan to understand efficiently. This might lead to confusion when perceiving the scores of the game.

    Unfair Results

Several critics also argue that the DLS method provides unfair results, especially in cases of short matches or matches where very low overs are only left. The DLS method is calculated to be very unfair.

The following are some of the criticisms faced by the DLS method by the critics’ players and also the general public.

    Frequently Asked Question

What is the complete form of the DLS method?

The DLS method stands for the Duckworth-Lewis Stern Method, which involves the interference of three statisticians, namely Frank Duckworth, Tony Lewis, and Steve Stern.

    Why is it used for?

The Duckworth-Lewis Stern method is used for the calculation of the matches interrupted due to the rain. It helps calculate the target score for the team batting second in the limited-overs cricket matches.

What are the minimum overs for the DLS method?

In an ODI match, both the teams must have faced at least 20 overs for the DLS method to be applicable unless one or both teams were bowled out earlier or the second team chased the score in less than 20 overs.

Thus, we conclude that the DLS method is both the game changer and the game ruiner; on one side it helps to decide the winners of the rain-interrupted matches; on the other hand, the transparency and the accuracy of this method are the big questions that trigger the critics and the players. However, a clear conclusion is impossible, but with future amendments, the method could be made much better.

    Thank you.
