Cyberkannadig refers to Kannadigas, or people from Karnataka, who regularly use the internet and technology. With rising internet and smartphone penetration in the state, more Kannadigas are getting online daily to connect with friends and family, consume Kannada content, and represent their native culture in the digital world. Let us explore the world of cyberkannadigas and understand their activities and contributions to the Kannada community online.

    History of Cyberkannadigas

Cyberkannadigas emerged in the late 1990s and early 2000s when internet penetration started rising in India. Some early Kannadiga internet users would frequent chat rooms and online forums to converse in Kannada. They used chat services like Yahoo Messenger to socialize with fellow Kannadigas living in other cities or abroad. Some even created blogs on platforms like Blogger and WordPress to write and share content related to Kannada literature, folklore, movies, and more.

This helped establish Kannadigas’ online presence and fueled more people to join. By the mid-2000s, many Kannadigas had started using Orkut and Facebook, providing new avenues for networking and connecting virtually. Groups on these platforms organized online and offline events and discussions related to Kannada culture and heritage. This growing community became active harbingers of Kannada online.

    Contributions of Cyberkannadigas

Over the last decade and a half, cyberkannadigas have played a big role in increasing Kannada’s presence on the internet through various contributions:

    • Social Media Engagement: Many actively participate in discussions and share Kannada content on social networks. This ranges from general updates and memes to more intellectual debates. Their engagement helps boost online Kannada communities.
    • Content Creation: Several cyberkannadigas run blogs, YouTube channels, and other creative outlets. They produce original writings, videos, podcasts and more related to Kannada poetry, music, history etc. This enriches Kannada’s digital media.
    • Technical Support: Some provide technical skills to develop websites and apps that support the Kannada language or showcase Kannada culture. Examples include dictionaries, translation tools, networking platforms etc.
    • Entertainment: A few cyberkannadigas have found success creating comedy sketches, parodies and other entertaining viral videos in Kannada online. This attracts younger netizens.
    • Online Courses: Certain individuals offer free courses or tutorials about Kannada literature, grammar, and art forms on platforms like Coursera and Udemy, popularizing Kannada learning.
    • Activism: Some participate in online petition campaigns and outreach drives to demand more Kannada representation, language inclusion in technology, and preservation of cultural heritage.
    • Localization: A few contribute translations and help localize software, apps, Wikipedia and other digital services in Kannada to improve access for native users.

Thus, cyberkannadigas play a pivotal role in developing Kannada’s virtual footprint and keeping the traditions alive for future generations online. Their efforts are gradually expanding Kannada into the digital sphere.

    Challenges Faced

While cyberkannadigas have made commendable progress, they still face certain challenges:

    Lack of tech support:

    • The Kannada keyboard layout and typing are only smoothly integrated into some devices and platforms, which makes content creation difficult. Users have to rely on third-party apps or switch layouts.
    • Most technology companies need to prioritize building features or localizing interfaces for Kannada. So, compared to other major languages, options like predictive typing, translations, etc., still need to be included.

    Online abuse:

    • Due to a lack of moderation, some cyberkannadigas face targeted online harassment and abusive comments on content related to culture, religion or regional politics. This deters creative expression.

    Limited opportunities:

    • Since Kannada internet users are still niche compared to other languages, unlike in English or Hindi, fewer monetization prospects are available for content creators through partnerships or sponsorships.
    • While job roles at tech companies are increasing, only some prioritize Kannada skills, which limits viable career options for cyberkannadigas interested in the IT sector.

Combating these issues through collective action and advocacy will help make cyberspace safer and more encouraging for Kannadigas online. The challenges will also gradually reduce as Kannada’s presence expands digitally.

    Role of Social Media

Social media has been influential in developing the cyberkannadig community over the last decade. Platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter have enabled cyberkannadigas to:

    • Connect more easily regardless of physical location through groups, pages, hashtags etc, dedicated to Kannada. This fosters online bonding and interaction.
    • Collaborate and organize virtual campaigns, competitions, and online celebrations of festivals together, which wasn’t possible before social media became widespread.
    • Develop micro-communities focused on specialized interests within Kannada culture, such as cinema, music, and literature, and thoroughly engage in themes.
    • Promote and share recommendations for each other’s original content creations, such as blogs, videos, etc., to larger audiences through social platforms’ shares and viral potential.
    • Raise awareness about issues of importance to Kannada through hashtags, change.org petitions etc and get mainstream visibility and participation for the cause.
    • Launch crowdfunding campaigns for worthy Kannada initiatives and projects that wouldn’t have succeeded otherwise, thanks to the combined support of cyberkannadigas online.

Social media has catalyzed cyberkannadigas into a cohesive force, taking Kannada promotion to new interactive levels by leveraging the collective social capital online. It will likely dominate how Kannada traditions engage future generations as well.

    Inspiring Cyberkannadigas

Amid the rapid developments, a few cyberkannadigas have particularly inspired the community through their dedication and innovative ideas:

    1. Guru Kiran is renowned as one of the earliest Kannada bloggers. Since 2001, he has written vibrantly about literature, culture and more on his ‘kaverikalpana’ blog.
    2. Prajwal Kudva founded the UKannada.com portal in 2003. It has since become a leading platform for Kannadigas worldwide, offering news, videos and networking features.
    3. Srujan Lokesh runs the YouTube channel Namma Ooru Stories, which documents the cultural landmarks of Karnataka through charming cinematic videos that reach millions.
    4. Madhuri B Krishna and Keerthi K Gowda created the free online course ‘Learn Kannada’ on Coursera to teach the basics of the language to anyone interested.
    5. Prashanth Sambargi established SAP Kerala as a pioneer in creating Kannada language software for Office use in the workplace.
    6. Hasiru Puliyada’s comedy sketches and parodies in Kannada gained huge popularity for their witty social commentary on YouTube.

The contributions of such pioneering cyberkannadigas will continue to encourage and mentor the growing community of digitally active Kannadigas, preserving rich traditions online. Their dedication is worth emulating.

    Future of Cyberkannadigas

As Karnataka becomes more technologically developed, cyberkannadigas are certain to play a vital part in how Kannada progresses digitally. Some likely trends include:

    • There has been an increase in Kannada language computing with more keyboards, predictive input, AI translation and so on as startups focus on the problem.
    • OTT platforms exclusively streaming Kannada movies, shows, podcasts, etc., are launched as the audience and talent base for content widen online.
    • The emergence of Kannada influencers with huge followings on social media as users and industries adapt to the creator economy.
    • Blockchain/NFTs could help monetize and distribute Kannada art, music, and collectibles in a decentralized way online for digital natives.
    • Online learning of Kannada culture and skills like music and yoga through VR/AR/Mixed reality by cyberkannadigas globally may rise.
    • Collaboration with the Government to create digital databases and archives of Kannada literature, folk art, and cultural history to preserve traditions.

As Kannadigas actively participate in building the virtual knowledge, economy and social landscape, their mother tongue is certain to spread far and wide through technology in the coming decades, too. Cyberkannadigas will lead this revolution.
